By the late 90’s, Toyota had already established the Celsior in the luxury car market, originally produced to be a prime competitor of Mercedes and BMW at the time, Toyota’s flagship model offered a unique blend of refinement and reliability. After 8 years of production, in 1997, Toyota sought to improve upon this well established VIP carrier for an improved facelift model. The 1UZ-FE was revised to add variable valve timing, which bumped up power to 290 HP as an added bonus, also now featured a 5 speed automatic transmission for better fuel economy and performance.
The facelifted Celsior now also featured updated styling cues, including a revised front and rear bumper, headlights, and taillights, and the front grille was restyled to give the car a more modern and refined look. Not wanting to stop at just looks and an improved drivetrain, Toyota also made modifications to the suspension and chassis of the facelifted Celsior to enhance the vehicle’s ride comfort and handling. These changes improved stability and provided a smoother driving experience.
