The Toyota RAV4 was originally introduced in Japan in 1994. It was a huge leap forward for Toyota in that it single-handedly created the compact sports utility vehicle segment, bridging what was at the time a huge gap between traditional off road and regular passenger vehicles. The construction of the first Gen Rav 4 was unique in the way it borrowed many of the best attributes from other Toyota’s of that era. The engine and driveline components came from the Carina/Camry, the suspension and transmission came from The Toyota Celica GT Four and the platform came from the Corolla. This resulted in the perfect recipe for the creation of the first compact sports utility vehicle.
The demand for these RAV4’s was incredibly high right out of the gate. Its compact size, predictable car-like handling, surprising off-road abilities made it an instant hit. The low displacement engine made it very inexpensive to run while also providing 4WD and ample cabin space to retain its status as a utilitarian vehicle.
