The Ferrari F355, Toyota MR2, Porsche 911 GT1, and the Lotus Esprit S4; all produced in 1995, all mid engine sports cars, all with wildly varying prices from $25,000 to $1.1 Million when new. While rarity and horsepower may play a factor, one thing is certain; the Toyota MR2 was in a market that was mainly dominated by foreign supercar legends. While it may not be the fastest, or most rare vehicle of the category, its definitely the most interesting.
Transitioning from the AW11 to the SW20, the MR2 didn’t lose its good looks, still featuring pop-up headlights and a distinctive wedge profile. This MR2 is one of a kind, featuring the stunning Toyota Color Code 938 Mystic Purple Mica, and while it was never offered from factory on the SW20, seeing this one in person makes you wonder why it wasn’t. Putting such a smooth color over a sporty car of this nature results in a visual experience like no other. The rest of the exterior is stock, making a great platform for whatever modification its next owner chooses.
The GT trim was the highest available in the SW20, offering multiple different premium interior options. The driver and passenger seat feature leather wrapped bolstering with a comfortable center section lined with alcantara. To match the bolstering, the steering wheel was also wrapped in black leather. The dashboard is void of the all so common dash lift we see on 90s Toyota’s, showing the commitment the previous owner took when caring for this MR2. Storage compartments can be found behind the seats for small trips, and while you may see a two seater and think it would be bad for storage, the MR2 features not only a trunk behind the engine compartment, but also a “frunk” for additional space where needed.
Mechanically, the SW20 was a marvel for its time producing 242hp out of its inline four cylinder 3S-GTE motor. Mounted behind the driver, this gave the MR2 a massively improved weight distribution, handling and stability, and an overall greater driving experience. Parts are easily obtainable as the MR2 Turbo was produced stateside and have been around for a long time.
Overall, the SW20 left a lasting effect on the mid engine market, establishing a fanbase that will always favor it. Serviced, titled, and ready to drive off of our lot, this will definitely be a great addition for its next owner. The possibilities are near endless, whether you plan to leave this one how it is and enjoy it, turn it into an absolute track monster, and everything in between. Bear in mind, while it may not be a Ferrari F355, it is roughly $300,000 cheaper for a much more enjoyable car.
