The 3rd generation Hilux Surf is easily one of our favorites here at JDM Sport Classics due to its durability, reliability, and usability in nearly any scenario you put it up against. Widely regarded as the best mid-size SUV of its era, the N185 was a huge leap forward from its predecessor. This generation proved to be an easy to service, fun to drive, and tremendously well received vehicle to its USDM counterpart.
This N185 Hilux Surf saw many improvements over it’s predecessor, a larger body on a longer wheelbase, increased interior space, increased cargo space, dual airbags, ABS, lift-up tailgate, coil-spring suspension all around, rack and pinion steering, and aerodynamic contour designed glass headlights. Additionally, Hilux Surf versions immediately moved to 16-inch wheels and gained a center differential, enabling the use of four-wheel drive on hard surfaces without complication for the first time.
This Hilux Surf is powered by the ultra reliable 2.7L 3RZ-FE gasoline motor that is paired to a 4 speed automatic transmission. An incredibly efficient and reliable 4 cylinder that can be useful for just about any application. Arguably one of Toyota’s most reliable gas motors, evidenced by the fact it was used across a variety of different models and generations. This motor was additionally found in many US vehicles, making parts sourcing and servicing options a breeze.
Part of the reason that these Surf’s are a favorite of ours here at JDMSC is there simplicity. These Hilux’s truly show that you don’t need a Bentley to be comfortable. This Hilux utilizes few features, however they are all incredibly practical, such as its power windows, power adjusting mirrors, cold A/C, good heat, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and an electronic compass, barometer, thermometer, and altimeter mounted on the ceiling! This example does have the unfortunate common issue of the sunroof being stuck closed, however it does not leak. The exterior is in good condition, and features a few modifications that help with the usability as well. The Westin side steps help passengers get in and out with the 2 inch lift kit, and the large front bull bar provides additional safety for the passengers.
With classic retro aesthetics blended with a modern, easy-to-service drivetrain and year-round 4WD capability this Hilux Surf SSR-X would make for a wonderful turnkey daily driver, fun family hauler, or determined weekend cruiser.
